Assoc. Prof. Rufat J. Efendiyev, Ph.D.

Research Fellow

Rufat Efendiyev is Head of the Division of Demographic and Sociological Trends Analysis of the National Observatory on the Labor Market and Social Protection Issues under auspices of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

From 2004 till 2020 he was working as Senior, Leading and lastly Chief Researcher at the Department of Demography and Problems of Labor Force Reproduction of the Institute of Economics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

His research broadly concerns migration, demographic development, gender and labor market issues.

Rufat participated in a series of migratory oriented studies. In 2011-2012 he was a correspondent member of the CARIM East Network of the project entitled "Creating an Observatory of Migration East of Europe" that the European University Institute (EUI, Italy) was implementing in partnership with the Centre of Migration Research at the University of Warsaw (Poland). The project was funded by the European Commission under the Thematic Programme on Migration and Asylum. In 2016 he got the DAAD scholarship for the program “Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists” and was conducting the research project entitled “Migration and integration issues: the case of Azerbaijanis in Germany” at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Germany). In 2020 Rufat Efendiyev, as a winner of the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, was conducting research on migration and integration issues and the migration behavior of Azerbaijanis in the United States at the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Rufat received a Bachelor (1998) and Master (2000) degrees in Public Administration from the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and PhD in Economics (2006) from the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. He is an author of some 45 scientific publications since 2002, including several monographs. Since June 2005 he is a Chairman of the "Social-Economic Researches Centre" Public Association (NGO, Baku, Azerbaijan). His research activities have been funded by the OSI and the Soros Foundations Network, Eurasia Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, DAAD, Asian Development Bank and other sources.

Rufat Efendiyev was the National Contact Point (NCP, Azerbaijan) of the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020. Also, he is a member of the IUSSP (International Union for the Scientific Study of Population - the worldwide professional association of population scientists).
